Positivism: How Love, Happiness and Compassion Change the World

This past weekend I hosted a workshop at the Canadian Conference on Student Leadership in Calgary, Alberta. The workshop was called “Positivism: How Love, Happiness and Compassion Change the World” and the description in the program was as follows:

How did one girl go from being suicidal and depressed to traveling the world for free, meeting celebrities and living a life of unconditional love? From Vancouver to Hawaii to California, presenter Jenni Rempel has been connected with big names like Maroon 5 and Jason Mraz. By making choices about how we act and think, we have the power to change the world we live in. This workshop will looking at empowering videos, personal stories and other examples of a loving world. We will also try out techniques for communicating with, loving, and inspiring others (and ourselves).

“What is going to save the human race? Please. Thank you. Why? Because if we all started treating the people and things that we interact with every day with respect and compassion, the effects would ripple through every aspect of our lives, transforming society.” – SuperForest.org

We ended by reenacting a quick version of this meditation:

If I would have had time I would have played this as well because it is beautiful:

A few things I could have done better: prefacing the Laughter Yoga exercises with the “fake it till you make it” explanation for health benefits; stating WHY I have certain opinions, being extra careful to state that everything is only MY opinion, define terms (ie: acknowledgement, unconditional love) in slides, acknowledge doubt.

The reviews were very positive… all parts of the workshop came up in feedback as valuable so I’m not sure if i’ll change the program of the workshop at all.

I feel inspired to make changes in the way I live my life.

I appreciate those around me.

Everything in life is an opportunity!

I want to call/e-mail my family and friends and change the way I think of my “enemies”

Awespirational!

It made me feel great!

I feel the need to find unconditional love for people i’ve shunned in my life.

There is always something positive in every situation.

I feel inspired, which is impressive.

This was the best session at the conference!

Positivistsm is awesome and can change the world.

I feel grateful and reaffirmed in my own positivity.

I feel great and worthy.

So much positive energy was going around the room, you were a great speaker!

I feel happy i’m happy!

I feel like smiling a big, huge smile!

I feel like a million bucks.

We have the ability to instantaneously love a stranger next to us. We all just want to be loved.

Reaffirmed my faith in humanity.

Giving space is powerful.

I feel touched.

I spend more time with the glass half empty, I need to change it to half full.

I feel happier, like I could change my life through love.

I want to spread kindness to people.

The lessons you taught and your attitude make me want to do what you do!

I learned how to appreciate the moments of life more.

You have an incredible perspective on life that is contagious, thank you.

I feel really inspired to live my life to the fullest and change my outlook.

I can affect change.

This session reminded me what it means to be human and the essence of humankind… How far off track we have gone and how important it is to get back on track.

I feel that there is hope for everyone and the potential for them to be good.

I feel inspired to banish negativity from my life and make it more positive. I feel uplifted to make change and share what i’ve learned with others.

I kind of realized that I am not always as kind as I could be and I don’t always appreciate what I have and i’d like to change that.

I feel really calm and beloved and excited that there are people like you in our generation.

The average score was 9.3 out of 10. (I think in the future I will add a “what would make you rate this session 10/10” part to my evaluation).

Fun for a Change

Recently I was part of a competition called Fun for a Change which I blogged about before.

Fun for A Change is a social innovation challenge that encourages youth to come up with fun ways to create positive change. It’s about getting people to “do the right thing” and change behavior by using fun and game-like motivations. It’s about learning and applying game mechanics without necessarily creating a game.  It’s about thinking outside the box and rethinking how we can change the world.

I am so proud of my team – we came in third place and here was our project: SMASHTRASH

the meaning of sleeplessness, butterflies, and sweat

Wow, that an amazing morning of discovery. Here was my experience when I woke up today.

observations:

  • I am tried
  • My palms are sweaty
  • My stomach is churning
  • My mouth is dry
  • I have to poop
  • I think I smell gross
  • My neck is sore
  • I feel like my insides are full of tingly butterflies
  • I kept waking up and trying to go back to sleep
  • I feel nervous and worries about nothing
  • I am thinking and overanalyzing somethings
  • My heart is beating a little faster than normal
  • I am thirsty but not necessarily hungry (because I am afraid to feed the butterflies)
Have you ever felt like this? What does this mean?
The first time I experienced this was the first day I started drinking so afterwards I figured that was the affect that alcohol had on my body. Every time I partied after that I felt the same way but today I also have the feeling. The only thing is I didn’t do any drinking or partying last night. However, I’m noticing I didn’t have very much water yesterday and I went to bed at 2AM, but ate at 7PM. I now think these are the feelings I get when I don’t hydrate and nourish myself. When I first started partying I got into this habit of not eating for long periods of time (yay for being vegan at a party) and not sleeping enough (party all night wooo). I’m so glad to have discovered this because in the future I can take care of myself better as a result! Yay!
In the past I made up some pretty funny stories about why I felt this way… I am sick, there was a boy I liked around which is causing this, I have stomach flu, it’s insomnia, i’m going crazy… I’m glad to have a new conclusion to try out : )

Fun for a Change

So right now i’m doing this competition hosted by SIFE SFU (Students in Free Enterprise) called Fun for a Change. It is a social innovation competition where we use design and game dynamics to try and make the world better.

The contest was created by Charles Tsai, this awesome super passionate guy who knows tons about social enterprise.

It is all especially perfect because I am turning my freelance work into a business which makes the world better. Reading Sacred Commerce is also inspiring my developing business model. I think this is all very funny because just as I was thinking and wishing there was a course on social entrepreneurship I could take… along comes this opportunity! Perfect!

Oh and I get to work with two of my favorite people, Colette and Diana on my team : )

We are going to make smart choices and sustainability easier and more fun. STOKED!

Environmentally Friendly Balloons!

DID YOU KNOW that latex balloons will biodegrade? Yayy!

Just remember NO STRINGS ATTACHED! Go without Strings/Ribbon (unless it is organic cotton, and even then birds and marine life can be harmed by them).

So in love with life!

Today as I was walking on Commercial Drive after an unexpected trip to Laughter Yoga, I was almost in tears of gratitude. The world is amazing and I am so grateful to be a part of it and get to experience all of these magical things.

Highlights:

Laughing until it hurts with awesome friends

Getting the party started hehe

Getting to MC the FCAT Formal and do all the amazing things everyone envisioned for the event : )

Having people actually recognize what I was trying to do with my “Black Swan” inspired masquerade outfit and think I looked perdy hehe

Failing and learning from it immediately instead of lingering in that “put down” phase.

Doing someone’s makeup and having them love it. Win!

Being awake.

Making random friends downtown and having good, non superficial conversations.

Waking up on the 18th floor of a Hotel near waterfront and doing a sun salutation on the balcony overlooking Vancouver as the sun rose. BEAUTIFUL.

Dancing to children’s music with kids who have no reservations!

Getting PAID to do video work for the first time! SO exciting!

COCONUT WATERRRR!

Wearing other people’s clothes.

Unexpectedly visiting Commercial Drive each day!

A-cappella gibberish jam!
