Welcome to Nerdfighting

What is a Nerdfighter?

Quite possibly you! Chances are, if you are reading this blog you are a nerdfighter (though you may not know it yet).

A nerdfighter is a person who, instead of being made of out bones and organs like regular people, is made out of awesome. They try to decrease world-suck.

This whole thing was started by two brothers, John and Hank Green. They have a youtube channel called vlogbrothers. John is an author (one of my favorites! he wrote Will Grayson, Will Grayson and Paper Towns to name a couple) and Hank is an eco-blogger turned internet musician.

They’ve spawned an entire internet community and some very cool real-life initiatives. For example, The Uncultured Project was started by a guy named Shawn who quit grad school and took his savings to try and end poverty. Mucho props to him. Hank started his own record label for YouTube musician, DFTBA Records.

There are all sorts of nerdfighters out there. From the large Dr.Who community (I should really watch at least one episode since so many people are so obsessed with this), to the Harry Potter nerds (Wooo!), to gleeks (also wooo!), to people that really like videogames (not so much for me but to each his own).

They have a video explaining all this…

Now that we’ve defined things here are some of my favorite videos to get you started.

Accio Deathly Hallows

A Song About an Anglerfish

The first 5 second of that NEVER fail to make me laugh. Kitty! Tee hee.

I Know (a song in 10 words)

How Nerdfighters Drop Insults

Haha, “Fowl and ugly witch” and “bombard of sac”. So jokes!

I hope you enjoy and remember…

DFTBA!

(don’t forget to be awesome)

Books You Should Read!

Recently Yoko Ono posted some reading recommendations and it inspired me to do the same. I was quite surprised that I have read one of the books on her list (Skinny Bitch) and heard about many others. I would definitely recommend a trip to your local library for these beauties.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

This is the most hauntingly beautiful novel I have ever read. It is one of those books where you just sit and cry for a long time, but it is okay. Very sad but very touching and powerful. It’s been made into a movie that I still have to see. Soon…

The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

This has been one of my favorite bedtime stories. It took me quite a while to get through it because I don’t always have time to devote to reading but it makes some interesting statements about society and the world. The author has a blog and did an interesting TED Talk I had to watch for one of my courses.

Paper Towns by John Green

I am a huge fan of John Green. His books and his youtube channel have developed a large internet following, and rightly so. He is a funny, engaging author and this was his first novel that I read. It was been optioned to become a movie so watch for it in the coming years!

Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin

This is a bit of a diet book (although it feels more like a magazine) but it is all about modern veganism and health. I love their witty writing style. The book had me laughing out loud several times. I am glad that both Yoko and I are recommending this one.
