Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway

inspiration board

“You are in the position of power in your life, but not the kind of power that controls. It has nothing to do with anyone else. It is not egomania. but a healthy self-love! This means power over your perceptions of the world, the self. This means power over how you react to situations in your life, power to do what is necessary for your own self-growth, power to create joy and satisfaction in your life,”

from Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway by Susan Jeffers

….

“You have power to be strong-minded and strong-willed, and simply the power to act and power to love.”

from my inspiring friend Janice : )

Today there was this gathering I was scared to go to because I made up that I didn’t know anyone very well, but I find that whenever I push myself beyond that silly fear and awkwardness I have tons of fun and make new friends! Yay! YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!

Hypnosis – My Cognitive Science Project

THIS IS WHAT I DO AT SCHOOL…

I took a cognitive science class this semester as an elective. It was taught by a professor from my major program (Interactive Arts + Technology) so instead of writing a final paper or exam I got to work on this. It was a really cool class that really opened my mind up. If you are curious…

cognitive science is the interdisciplinary scientific study of mind and its processes

– wikipedia

The course I took was called COGS 310: Consciousness. I wrote a bit about some of my insights and musings during the semester here and here.

Our project focuses on hypnosis, which is a form of brainwashing that shares some similar techniques to mind control and meditation. Our experimental video montage draws inspiration from the techniques of self-imposed hypnotism where the viewers perform hypnosis on themselves rather than having a manipulator to conduct the process. This

Ok, so I might have ripped of this amazing video a little bit…

But great artists steal, right? Though the visual style is similar we crafted our script on specific principals of hypnosis and we made all of the materials and the soundtrack from scratch.

l’histoire de la vie – an interactive multi-linear narrative

This is what I do at school…

This project is intended to take inspiration from the concept of a “semordnilaps”. A “semordnilaps” is a word (or pattern of any sort of thing) which creates
something new in reverse (the word itself is a reversal of the word palindromes). The project uses the visual film medium and the power of storytelling to create a
piece which can be viewed entirely in either directions of playback, creating two different experiences for the user, the giving the user control and agency over their
experience. The story could also be described as a “mise en abîme” because it is a never-ending narrative loop. The beginning is the end and the end is the beginning.
In this way, the narrative structure symbolically represents the central theme of the piece: the circle of life (hence the title, l’histoire de la vie).

STAGE STAR: an interactive video installation

This is what I do at school…

STAGE STAR is an interactive video projection installation designed specifically for the musical concert setting. By translating audio input and control from crowd
movement into video and light projection, STAGE STAR creates a concert experience that is both immersive and unique. It was my final project for IAT 443: Interactive Video.

I am so proud of my team for pulling this all together!

And I’d probably be happy”

Letter Writing Works!

Recently I attended a lovely Liberation BC letter-writing volunteer night. We wrote letters to politicians and media outlets in response to animal rights issues.

There was a room full of awesome vegans and I can’t remember the last time I laughed that hard.

They introduced me to this guy and his vegan music videos:

SO FUNNY! I can’t find it now but my favorite one included him singing

I’m vegan ’cause animals are my friends and I want people to stop murdering my friends!

I was also reminded how lucky I am to have a vegan penpal!

The best part was right at the end of the night. I found all of these awesome animal hats that some little kids must have made in the recycling bin. I wore one all the way home. Tiger Jenni. Rawr. This week I got a letter back from city council saying they received my letter about banning Shark Fins and they are passing it around to all of the councilors and the mayor! Cool!

I’ve decided that it isn’t enough to value something and reflect that in the choices I make and how I live, if I want to create change I need to communicate with the world and share my knowledge, to be a voice for the voiceless : )

UPDATE: It looks like local politician Fin Donnelly, is advocating for sharks and recommending a nation wide Shark Fin ban! Awesome! Check it out here: http://www.findonnelly.ca/node/388

Cafe Gratitude is closing?

This post comes as a response to the recent announcement of the sale/closing of all Northern California Cafe Gratitude locations.

I’m gonna be honest, I have not worked at Cafe Gratitude. I have not seen any actual evidence of how they deal with compensation or tips, and I haven’t done Landmark so I can’t comment on that… however, I have had my life changed by their incredible philosophy. I learned how to love better, how to listen, and how all of that was within me to begin with.

I had the pleasure of recently doing a workshop with Matthew and Terces recently where they mentioned there was a legal battle beginning and I think Terces especially was very upset about the whole thing. It was very hard for me to watch her struggle with that. I don’t know anything for sure, but I am making up they have made good in the world. Actually, that’s not true. I know one thing for sure. Cafe Gratitude inspires me every day to live better and love more. The last time I walked into a Cafe Gratitude one of my friends in the kitchen said “Hey, this girl came all the way from Canada to eat at our restaurant.” and he was right. And I am so grateful for that.
